The Emerald City

‘There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.’ The award show attire just keeps getting better and better this year. But there were so very many stunning gowns and lovely moments from the 81st Oscar Ceremony that I want to address one specific accessory that was positively breathtaking. Angelina Jolie is always striking, but those enormous emeralds dangling from her ears were mesmerizing. Emeralds are not the common red carpet bling, but after last night I think that’s a mistake. Her earrings were stellar.

SAG - Stunning And Glamorous

I know it is a bit late, but I like to take my time and survey the options. I was particularly impressed with the procession of elegant dresses at the SAG award show of 2009. Here are a few of my favourites -

Laura Linney, in Michael Kors with Cathy Waterman jewels and a Tod's clutch.

Evan Rachel Wood, in Monique Lhuillier with Sergio Rossi shoes.

Kate Winslet, in Narciso Rodriguez with Chopard jewels and Christian Louboutin shoes.

Anne Hathaway, in Azzaro with Cartier jewels and Christian Louboutin shoes.

Penélope Cruz, in Azzedine Alaïa with Chopard jewels and a Felix Rey clutch.

Michelle 'O' bama

Politics, Polished, and Posh - not since Jackie O have those words had so much in common. Our new first lady, Michelle Obama, may not be the first first lady with style, but she sure is making America look good. She is a fashion icon with her professional, elegant, and bold style. The secret to her style success - color, color, color!

Empress Coco

Oh how I love fall fashion! Just when I thought Karl Lagerfeld could do no greater - his pre-fall 2009 collection hit the runway. The stellar show was a marriage of Russian decadence and Byzantine jewelry. His inspiration? Style.com explains that the creation draws on 'Coco Chanel's exotic history with men: in this case, the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and the Russian inspirations—the Ballets Russes, Constructivism, Byzantine jewelry, and Slavic folklore'. How he continues to stun with his stunning creations is proof that he is truly a master of aesthetics and elegance.

Aphrodite

Because fashion and women are meant to be worshipped…goddess inspired dresses are breezing down the runway as a popular look for Spring 2009. Designers know that nothing makes a woman look and feel more elegant and feminie than the drape of these lovely flowing dresses. With so many different glamorous styles and colors you sure to find one to flatter your form.

Reduce, Recycle, Reuse

I wish I had a few photographs of my best examples of this topic, but alas I am without. However, still droning on about the poor economy I want to say that there is little way to justify the prices of all things fashion these days. Thus I am stealing the campaign slogan about the environment and applying it to our wardrobes - it is time to ‘reduce, recycle, and reuse’. It’s time to get creative!
Lets admit it - we could all happily wear a new outfit everyday. Sick to death of looking at the same clothes in my closet but not eager to spend any money has forced me to come up with new combinations in an otherwise old wardrobe. You’d be surprised how chic some pieces you purchased three years ago still are; you’re probably just bored of seeing them hanging in your closet.
Reduce the amount of time you spend shopping. Recycle the items you already have by looking in the back of the closet at the clothes you swore you’d never touch again or by going through those old boxes of clothes. Reuse all your findings by pairing possibilities you never imagined together. I have faith that the inability to buy the trend of the moment will allow for individual style to resurface where it has been lost to our lust for labels.

Copycat

I am usually all about the real thing. I have never been a fan of knockoffs, however these are troubled times and $900 for shoes, even exquisite shoes, is ludicrous. At Barney’s I was smitten with a pair of Lanvin pumps, as I am with most things Lanvin. Sadly I had to leave the store and the love of my life on the shelf. A few days later I was at Steve Madden with a friend when we both saw the perfect copy of the Lanvin pumps possible. Best part, people keep complimenting me on them! I have a new respect for the delicate design of copying perfection.

Classic, Contemporary, Chanel

Only Chanel could do classic and contemporary like this. Today I went to the Chanel Mobile Art Exhibit in New York. The exhibit is a wild, UFO-like structure that is meant to look like the identity of Chanel, the quilted handbag that has become a symbol of style and status in fashion. This purse is travelling around the world – Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York, London, Moscow, and Paris. It features an experience of different artists visions intertwined with this iconic and timeless identity of Chanel. The different artistic visions unite somewhere in the realm of chic/trendy and provocative. One of the artists showcases video images of naked people beating each other with Chanel handbags and scurrying naked after a giant Chanel bag like little mice.
One of the key messages of the exhibit was the importance of a bag, not just an expensive purse, but the power of a bag, the things inside it that describe and define us; the secrets we keep inside. Thus the idiom of the exhibit was: Empty Your Bag. It is a French expression, ‘vider son sac: dire ce qu’on a sur le coeur’. Which the exhibit explained that in French this idea of empting one’s bag is used when someone reveals something that was kept secret for a long time. Our bags hold a lot more than our wallets and lip-gloss. Maybe that’s why I like ones so large I can hide inside, I must have a lot of secrets…
If you find yourself in any of the places this spaceship purse is landing it's surely worth a visit.

Magic Wand

I know it has been a while, but I thought I should share a favorite beauty secret or savior. Stick it to redness and blemishes. Clinique makes the perfect concealer stick to cover minor imperfections on your skin. It comes in three different shades to match your complexion and actually works to cover redness and fight acne. The best part is these tiny stick lasts forever. I carry mine around with me everywhere just in case…

DRESS for Success

Getting ready for work each day can be exhausting in its own right. Trying to look chic and professional every morning can wear you out and you haven’t even had your coffee yet. The remedy: stock up on stylish, yet appropriate dresses. A simple, smart dress with manageable heels to carry you through the day and just a hint of accessory will ensure that you look first-rate and fashionable at the office, but will save you the angst of trying to make that white blouse and trousers look different than it did yesterday. Here are a few looks to try.

Drivers Start Your Engines

I can’t seem to find a clever or elegant way to articulate my new must-have obsession, but I love this accessory that I foresee as a trend as the brisk winds begin to blow. Driving gloves seem to be the new avant-garde statement item. They are chic and edgy. Best of all these gloves are practical for fall, which is usually hard to come by in the name of fashion. Call me crazy, but I am officially on the hunt for a great pair. I think I prefer the full finger style, I may not be tough enough for the cutoffs...?

All That Glitters

As a new intern in design at DVF I thought it was only appropriate to show some of my work. After hours of cutting and sewing the results of our spring 2009 collection resulted in a beautiful show of glitter and embellishments. Every look had something special from beads to sequins and each topped off with an intricate headpiece. The headpieces are way cool, but take it from me... took a long time to make (I spent countless hours working on them). But in the end it was all worth it and all very exciting. Here are a few looks from the show. Enjoy!

Mother Nature

This fall designers like Burberry Prorsum are showcasing a nature inspired collection in perfect harmony with the season it represents. I may be biased as it is my favorite, but fall is full of splendor, with the brisk weather and colored leaves it is no wonder designers are trying to replicate that serenity in their pieces. Burberry Prorsum has mixed street wear beanies with feathers and earth tones. This synergy had a fantastic result making mother nature a trend for fall 2008. Integrate some of this earth child look into your wardrobe.

Damn Baby

Okay so I know this mini fashionista is the product of a freak marriage/scientology experiment and is she is probably an alien, but baby's got style! Suri Cruise is so chic I'm actually envious. Listen someone tell me who her stylist is. She has better clothing than the It girls in Hollywood. She is one lucky little Extra-Terrestrial.

Frill Seekers

In life we're all looking for a little fun and excitement. Why shouldn't your style and accessories reflect that vest for life. Frill is a fall trend that gives these pieces great detail. Go ahead and frill yourself.

Gossip Girl

I hate to be this predictable and obvious, but clearly one of the hottest shows on television (okay shut it I love it) was going to be at the head of the class this fall for fashion. Naughty schoolgirl is back, but this time it has a chic new look with expensive labels and tailored clothing. The former fantasy/memory of short plaid shirts and pigtails is over. What makes this trend sexy and alluring is the attitude and femme fatale persona that goes along with it. And all this association just from a show about devious little rich high schoolers... this could make fall interesting.

Typecasting

The stereotype of the over-the-knee boot has been trashy, a sort of what corner are you workin vibe. But this fall these boots are getting a whole new reputation. They are sexy and provocative but with everyone from Sergio Rossi to Brian Atwood showcasing them they're also now chic and sophisticated. Assumptions are so last season.

Thank God I'm A Country Girl

Well, life on the farm is kinda laid back
Ain't much an old country boy like me can't hack
It's early to rise, early in the sack
Thank God, I'm A Country Boy

John Denver isn't so dated at the moment as we see a new trend for fall on the rise. Not only is plaid still in, but it's the whole country style that is hitting the runway and the streets for this season. Although life in the city isn't so laid back you can bet you'll see this look walking around. Pick up a pair of riding pants and Frye boots and you'll be ready to go out or heard some cattle.

African Studies

True beauty and inspiration is best created from culture and meaning. Any good designer knows this. That is what makes this Swarovski crystal and rhodium 'Maasai' necklace by jewelry designer Tom Binns one of the hottest accessories for fall. (check it out at style.com)
For the Maasai women beadworking has a long history as a symbol by which the women can articulate their identity and position in society through body ornaments. Although wealth in this African culture is primarily focused on cattle and children, the use of jewelry is rather similar to affluent areas in the world where jewelry is often used to show or prove a sort of social standing...

Leather Lovin

So don’t tell PETA I said this, but you can’t go into fall without a leather jacket. Designers like Rick Owens and Helmut Lang are doing incredible things this season with leather bomber jackets. This one pictured, by Rick Owens, is rustic and vintage looking. It is lined and thus warm enough to transition into a few weeks of winter before it gets truly frigid. Helmut Lang has one at Intermix that is more feminine and dressy. The leather is so soft and the neck zips up asymmetrically. Save a few loose pennies. These jackets are pricey, but so worth it. Definite fall lust item.

As Pretty As A Present

PROENZA SCHOULER

MICHAEL KORS

This fall wrap yourself up in ribbons and bows. Models hit the runway for Fall 2008 looking like gifts. This trend has designers taking everything - blouses, dresses, pants - and tying them all up. We have seen bows before, but this season these details are oversized and everywhere.

Chunky, Frumpy, Baggy = Sexy Fall Trend

Marc Jacobs is making every woman’s dream come true this fall. For day and night you can look stylish and chic in loose, baggy, chunky knits. So while it has been so fun painting on our dresses and leggings every night it looks like breathing is about to return to our daily routines. For daytime you can pair this look with shorts or skinny or straight-leg pants. Transition these heavy sweaters to evening by adding a belt, fun jewelry and a hot little skirt.

The Very Little, Little Black Dress

Audrey Hepburn may not approve of the changes being made to her classy dress from Breakfast at Tiffany's, but times are changing. This staple piece has undergone a contemporary makeover. It's shorter and sexier then ever. The classic little black dress now has a little more sass. So grab your pearls and your girls and hit the town.

A New Look for Lace

From chains to lace, here is another necessity. Fall fashion is already gearing up to be an eclectic mix of patterns, fabrics, and styles. Heavy necklaces festooned atop feminine lace, like shown here at Prada’s Fall 2008 runway show. Prada took the sophistication of lace in juxtaposition with dominatrix styled hair, makeup, and accessories proving that anything goes this coming season. Be brave and bold with your style and you are sure to look strong, sexy, and elegant.

Chain Me Up

Add a heavy chain necklace to your must-have list for fall, like these Givenchy pieces. A definite way to ensure you will look striking and edgy. I will have to choose one sans crosses personally, but you get the idea. They're stunning. I may need to be chained up if I don't stop finding great things for fall.

The Tortoise and the Hare

The race is on. Pony hair and tortoise are running around in many designers' collections for fall. So if you can afford these shoes you’ve learned all you can from an Aesop’s fable and the only lesson here is these are two fun fads for the upcoming season.

Time to Watch Out

Men you better watch out. Women are continuing to show their independence and strength in this world. I think the sexiest thing is a men's watch on a woman's "delicate" wrist. I love the contrast of the masculinity of the size with the overall essence of female femininity. This is just another representation of women's infiltration of what has been and I think at times is still inappropriately and secretly considered "A Man's World." If you look around you see that statement is positively medieval.

Fall for Floral

This fall get ready for a forties revival. The Michael Kors Fall Ready-to-Wear 2008 collection took to the runway in tailored and feminine floral pieces that rekindled memories of Grace Kelly. The show consisted of sable coats, cashmere sweaters, and pencil skirts. Glamour and elegance are finally back in style.

At Great Lengths

It's getting hotter by the day and the humidity persists. Last year at this time it was all about itty bitty dresses. This summer the maxi dress is the thing to wear to stay cool in this heat. These dresses are free, flowing, and feel great. If you are on the shorter side, like me, you need to think about your choice. You don't want to look like you're drowning in the dress. Choose a cut that is comfortable, but still flattering on your frame. Here are two styles by Alice and Olivia.

When In Rome

I suppose the saying should go: When in Rome, look damn good. The rich and the famous headed to Rome for the Gucci Resort fashion show yesterday, Tuesday July 9th. Once again it was the men who blew me away looking ever so fine and dashing. Here are a few photos from the after party and a few of the men that stole the attention away from the show.

"Please, Sir, I Want Some More"

These boots look like something The Artful Dodger, the colorful character from Dickens novel Oliver Twist, would wear. Thus, I realize the irony in the fact that I searched high and low for boots that look like the costume of a homeless runaway, but I love them nonetheless. I finally found these shoes at the vintage store. In terms of practicality they are very comfortable, great walking shoes for exploring the city. I wore them with skinny jeans and a plain white t-shirt, but they are versatile and cute with shorts or a dress as well. They have a chic retro look to them, somewhere between an earthy/hipster vibe. Maybe it is just that I am a huge fan of Dickens, but personally I think lace up boots are on the rise.

Sex in Soho

Tucked away in Soho is a small boutique, Agent Provocateur. This racy destination carries the essence of European lingerie. Agent Provocateur’s mission is to promote innate sensuality: “The aim was to create an availability of high quality designer lingerie with creative flair to stimulate, enchant and arouse both wearers and their partners.” This level of sexy sophistication is achieved in the amount of detail in each piece, lace and bows in all the right places. Agent Provocateur carries just about anything you need to feel sexy and confident while wearing close to nothing, like a crystal tipped whip for $225 proving that this is no seedy sex shop. This designer brand has attracted the faces of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kate Moss as spokespeople. Don’t be shy and check this place out for yourself. The staff is terribly friendly and merchandise is truly unique and beautiful.

The boutique is located at 133 Mercer Street. Or visit the website at http://www.agentprovocateur.com/

Cynthia Rowley Summer Style

I recently went to the Cynthia Rowley store on Bleecker Street. I have seen some of her pieces before, but I had never been in the store. I was surprised to find that I loved everything. The clothes are very chic and feminine with a dress or skirt for every occasion this summer. I could have bought a whole new wardrobe. Here are some ideas from the collection:

Lanvin Does Denim

Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz has used his eye for dresses and decided to do denim. He is collaborating with the Swedish company, ACNE. On Monday, June 30th, Alber and ACNE celebrated their new collection at the Hôtel de Crillon salon. Designers, models, and fashionistas were all in attendance at the event. The line will not be released until sometime in November, but here are a few of their designs.

A West Village "Gem"inola

I am in transit to my new life in New York City! While doing a bit of research on my neighborhood I discovered this adorable vintage store called Geminola. The owner finds vintage fabrics from around the world and uses them to create original, one of a kind garments. I have been checking out the press and reviews of what people call "the best vintage shop in New York." This store is located at 41 Perry Steet and I am moving to 22 Perry. Can you say trouble?!

I'm sorry if you're tall because right now it's all about high heels. So if you are 5'2 like me you will be glad to know... the higher the BETTER! Strap on your stilts and hit the streets. Just be careful how many glasses of champagne you consume while hanging out in the meatpacking district, because although you look super trendy, those cobblestone streets are difficult to master in heels like this even without the drinks.

Ikat Attack

This summer is all about ikat print. We saw this trend hit the runway in Spring 2007, but it is back and this time it is everywhere. Designers are printing it on everything from pillows to handbags. Ikat looks great when it's matched with something simple. I like how Rachel Bilson paired her top with a plain black skirt. This intricate design can also enhance the decor of a room by adding some pattern and color. So wrap it around your neck or buy some printed throw pillows. You need something ikat this summer!

Okay so I can't say that tongue twister five times fast, but I do think this shell jewelry is unique. I saw this spread in the fashion accessories section of the July issue of Elle Magazine. This jewelry is all part of John Hardy's Cinta Collection. The pieces - rings, pendants, and broaches - detailed with diamonds and semiprecious stones are a beautiful accessory for any summer outfit.

Fakin' It

I want to share my ultimate beauty secret. It doesn’t matter if it’s a lunch, a date, or a red carpet event, if you want to look and feel beautiful the best accessory is… false eyelashes!

The dramatic effect of fake lashes goes perfectly with the typical social drama that comes with any good night out. This way at least you look fabulous while dealing with it.

I swear by MAC Cosmetics eyelashes. They will put them on for you in the store, which is ideal to ensure long lasting wear. It only takes about fifteen minutes for them to apply, so I usually pop in during the day of an event, or if I’m desperate I have been known to make a stop on my way to the party to have them put on. Trust me they’re worth it!

The Lust and The Must

I really wish women could get everything they want in the name of fashion, but I am a realist and I know that can't always be the case. However, I don’t believe in acceptance, I believe in alternatives. A while ago I blogged about my obsession with the Givenchy jelly gladiator sandals, but I realized they were rather expensive for your everyday summer shoe. These Old Navy jelly sandals are the perfect summer must-have. While they aren’t the hip gladiator style, they come in playful colors and are super comfortable. The best part is they are only $10 so you can buy one of each color to match every swimsuit and sundress in your closet.

On Tuesday June 17th all the It girls were on display in New York, zipped up in their Hervé Léger finest, for the Whitney Art Party and Auction, co-hosted by Max and Lubov Azria. This wonderful event showcases innovative art and invitees include the future young leaders and thus, supporters of the American arts. While the event was an art auction, it looks more like a Hervé Léger by Max Azria fashion show to me.

Zany Zooey

Zooey Deschanel would seem like an unlikely fashionista because of her quirky personality, but this actress/singer is beautiful, a bit eccentric, and uber stylish. Zooey has a unique fashion sense. She loves wearing dresses and mixing vintage pieces into her wardrobe. Her style is youthful, glamorous, and retro. I totally love and admire her experimental and fearless style and I think she is adorable. Watch the video above where Zooey talks about her look and her fashion inspirations. You can also check her out on the cover of the July issue of Lucky Magazine.

The Mad Hatter

We have fallen down the rabbit hole this summer and hats are all the rage. You can blame it on Alice in Wonderland or the Sex and the City movie, but either way it's a fantastic trend. Hats are a great accessory and so much fun. There are some incredible hat stores in New Orleans, in the French Quarter, where the hats are works of art. Each one is handmade and one of a kind. Those are the best places to buy them. So, in the fashion of the Mad Hatter, the more original and wackier the hat the better!

Corporate Creativity

As my fellow peers and I head out into the workforce, a new wardrobe is a necessity obviously! I have watched people throw their creativity and personal style out the door and settle on the classic and boring pantsuit. I understand that some offices are very formal and require this corporate uniform. However, besides the fact that it the easy choice, the rest of us have no excuse. There are other options. This photo shoot from the June issue of Vogue is an inspiration of how woman can look elegant, beautiful, chic, and office appropriate.

Making a Splash!

Things are heating up this summer with new outrageously stunning swimwear. Lather on the sunscreen and leave the tanning to Paris Hilton and La Lohan. That look was so 2007, and so unhealthy. Plus, you won't need the tan to look smokin’ this summer. All you need is a brilliant swimsuit. Designers are putting more detail into the cut and design of swimwear than ever before. Check out these ornate suits by Badgley and Mischka. Now we all just need to master the beach strut!

Sweet Summer Style

If anyone was wondering how to look great this summer here you go. Emmy Rossum looks positively perfect strolling in New York in red pants, a clean chic white top, and eating ice cream to top it all off! She is the epitome of summer style.

Here's the Skinny...

I hope you have all saved those skinny belts that used to be popular, because you're going to want them. Designers RTW Resort 2009 collections are showing skinny belts as the newest must-have accessory. It's about creating a waist. Pretty in Pink

This season fuchsia has been showing up everywhere in fashion - bags, shoes, dresses. I have never been a huge fan of pink, unlike my mother who I think dreams in pink, but I am coming around. This color is a showstopper. If you show up in a fuchsia dress, like this one by Diane von Furstenberg, I promise heads will turn. Don't be scared of a burst of color and do as my mom would do. Flirting with Ferretti

Recently I have seen at least three women at every event rocking the red carpet in a dress by Alberta Ferretti. It is no wonder women are falling for Ferretti. Her frocks are feminine and beautiful. She plays with fabrics and colors to produce stunning creations. Ferretti always seems to hold steadfast to the pretty and elegant, and why not, it looks good and women love them.

SOLD OUT

Note to self... Don't hesitate. My friend showed me these Lanvin Key West oversized sunglasses at Barney's a while ago. I thought they were way chic and retro, but I wanted to think about them. Well, I thought for too long. Now every store is sold out and every website says the item is no longer available. Thus, clearly I can't live without them! They are very cool and 40's. I love to see some new styles and shapes for sunglasses. I'll just have to continue to lust for them.

In Memory of the Father of Fashion

Yves Saint Laurent
1936 - 2008

Yves Saint Laurent passed away yesterday, June 2, at his home in Paris. He is responsible for some of the greatest fashion trends and his collections were always revolutionary. YSL was an incredible designer because he wasn't focused on the clothes; he was focused on the women who wore them. He once said, “Fashion isn’t just to decorate women, but to reassure them, give them confidence.” And that is what he did best. YSL had an uncanny ability to make women feel sexy, strong, and beautiful in his clothing. While he will be terribly missed his legacy remains an important part of fashions past, present, and future.

Some of the great designers commented on the tragic loss -

"He's my big fashion hero and always has been and it's really sad that he's gone," said Marc Jacobs Sunday night of Saint Laurent's death. "I and a couple of friends always say, 'How would Saint Laurent do it?' It's a kind of standard for chic, for youth, for sex appeal without vulgarity and overall beauty

Vera Wang said, "I think I'm in shock. I'm in fashion today because of him. I lived in Paris right next to his first couture house. I feel in love with fashion because of Yves Saint Laurent. He was the first international superstar in the modern era."

Jean Paul Gaultier added, "For me, Saint Laurent is and has always been the absolute master. In his work, I find the energy to do my work. He gave us glamour, he loves women—and he opened a lot of doors for fashion. What we are all doing is because of Saint Laurent. We all love him, and he knows that."

The J Lo Revival

Jenny from the block's ghetto fabulous style is actually becoming fabulous. I have not yet made up my mind about the getup but this Paul & Joe Lapaulet silk jumpsuit is popping up everywhere. Carrie wore it in the Sex and the City movie and I have seen it in stores and magazines. I guess I can't knock it till I try it... on.

How Could I Resist

In the midst of my apartment hunting in New York this weekend I found time to see the anticipated Sex and the City movie. The weekend was a success! I found my west village dream apartment and I liked the movie. Neither was expected. I should have known I would enjoy the movie, at the end of the day I am a silly girl who loves love, NYC, and clothes. It won’t win any Academy Awards, but it was entertaining. Even if you want to pretend you didn’t get a bit choked up at parts you can’t deny that the clothes were avant-garde and beautiful. Carrie’s new closet alone was stunning. It was more a fashion show than a movie. I won’t go on about it, but check out some of the images. And go see it so you at least know what to buy. The movie will define fashion for the next year. Things could get interesting.

Boy Scouts Honor

I am just getting used to the rhythm of summer and we are already seeing glimpses of designer collections for Resort 2009. Karl Lagerfeld made a splashy entrance with the new Chanel Cruise show at the Raleigh Hotel in South Beach, Miami. Many of the looks were inspired by seventies fashion. The boy scout tie was a recurring detail in the show. Be on the lookout for this unique new accessory trend.

Big Bird

The hottest color right now is ANYTHING bright yellow. If you live on the east coast like me, where the weather is usually cloudy to unpredictable, it's a good idea to be your own sunshine!

WhiteOut

This ultimate clean and feminine look is the perfect way to beat the summer heat. These white dresses are light and elegant and work for all occasions. As Roberto Cavalli said of this trend, “It’s soft, innocent, and a new level of seduction with a little sensuality.” This whiteout style offers a softness and simplicity with a hint of summer romance.

Young and Restless

I love Alexander Wang, his collections and his perseverance in the fashion industry. Recently, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced their nominations for 2008. Wang was given the nomination for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear. When asked about the low point of his career he states: "The very first time we had our collection we were turned away. They told me the product wasn't ready yet, that I was too young and that I should go back to school. But I didn't really take that as an answer.” (Alexander Wang at his first presentation in 2006, the happy result of ignoring bad advice.) It’s a good thing Wang doesn’t have a problem defying authority.

Wang has only been designing in the spotlight for two years and he has established himself by his unique, acute understanding of women’s fashion. His latest Fall 2008 ready-to-wear collection is edgy elegance meets street chic. He has combined lose trousers with tight tank tops and oversized blazers with leggings or skintight pants. The line is aggressive and slinky, and the women look beautiful and strong. Wang has a fresh, energetic take on fashion. We will continue to see wonderful things from this new and incredibly talented designer.

The Reel Reason We Love Cannes

Today is the 10the day of the 61st Cannes Film Festival, the biggest film festival of the year. The media is buzzing with news and photos of the premieres. However, the reports have been less critical of the featured films and much more focused on the red carpet glamour. There have been fabulous fashion debuts. Some of the showstoppers are Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, and Gwyneth Paltrow. But the woman who is taking Cannes by storm and rocking the red carpet with her charm and grace is Natalie Portman. Her fashion choices are elegant and youthful, showcasing an array of dresses by Chanel and Lavin. Her radiant smile and stunning style is sure to continue to detract from the reel reason everyone is there.

The Boyfriend Blazer

Guys can be complicated, but their style is simple. The menswear craze is hot and a blazer is smart and stylish way to upgrade an outfit. Wear it like this with a retro t-shirt or give it a dressier look by pairing it with a silk camisole.

Flapper Fashion

Continuing my theme of fringe and costume party ideas hitting the streets as the latest fashion trends, this 1920’s style has returned. You no longer have to host or attend a Great Gatsby party to dress like Daisy Buchanan. This look is flirty and feminine, and sure to grab the attention of your own Jay Gatsby. It’s too bad that while this beautiful look is back, romance still seems a thing of the past.

What's Love Got To Do

Fashion is rollin’ on the river back the days of Tina Turner and all things fringe. Designers are adding fringe detail to just about every piece of clothing in their collections - dresses, sweaters, bags. I am happy to report that while her famous style has returned as the newest trend, her shag haircut remains a thing of the past. So get ready to shimmy and shake around town.

Chic and Comfortable

I thought that anything stylish couldn’t be comfortable. I have pleasantly been proven wrong, and by my favorite designer nonetheless! These Lanvin ballet flats are incredibly comfy and come in all different colors. I actually went on a two hour bike ride and walked everywhere today in these shoes. They are a great investment. I recommend the patent leather ones because they last longer and never look dirty. I am officially convinced that they are worth every penny. Now the hardest part about buying Lanvin flats... picking a color!

The Life of the Party

Marni handbags are stunning and festive. These bags are made of crazy material and come in different colors that are sure to attract attention. A stellar tote is all you need to get ready for an upcoming celebration. The host will thank you for bringing the decorations, because no party is complete without...

Victoria's Secret Revealed

You know that dream when you show up at school in your underwear. Well it has become a reality, and the hottest fashion trend for spring/summer. Lingerie and nighties are a new staple piece to incorporate into your wardrobe. You can dress up this look with jewelry and heels for night, or throw on a sweater for a more casual, daytime feel. It ‘s definitely sexy and it’s about time for Americans to stop being so modest. I’m interested to see how people will adopt this runway look to their own style.

The Cold War

Navy nail polish is the new black. I love this OPI color, Russian Navy. If that one is too iridescent, try OPI Light My Sapphire.

Supermen

The Costume Institute held their annual gala on May 5 at the MET. Vogue editor in chief, Anna Wintour, co-hosted the Superhero themed event along with Giorgio Armani, Julia Roberts, and George Clooney. The red carpet featured all the beautiful celebrities lucky enough to receive an invitation. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the gowns or the few celebrities who showed up in their comic book best that had my attention. It was the men. The gentlemen saved the day looking ever so posh and debonair. Check out these Supermen!

Headstrong

It's not about what you put on your body. The outfit is all about how you top it off. Fashionable headwear is a necessity as of late.

I love this trend. Once you learn to master the placement and maintenance of keeping the headband where you want it, it is a great accessory to improve any look. Designers have started adding intricate hairpieces to their collections. Barneys is a great place to find them. Be prepared to pay more than you ever planned on spending on a headband, but no one ever said style came cheap.

Sometimes Shoe. Always Fabulous

These incredible Christian Louboutin shoes appear under many names. I have seen them called Sometimes Shoe Boot, Oxford Lace-up, Sometimes Shoe Sandal... all I know is, they are HOT!

The Family Jewels

Jewel-tones are showing up in spring and summer collections, and they aren’t going away. Designers like Versace, Doo.Ri, and Proenza Schouler are giving fall flair with vibrant amethyst and amber dresses, stockings, and pumps. Colorfully clad models looked like proud peacocks parading down the runway at the shows. So hang on to your brightly hued dresses and pair them with colored tights for the upcoming season. It’s about time designers kept color in fashion year round.

Environmentally Elegant

Everyone is gaga for anything “green” these days, and it’s not the color that I’m referring to. Captain Planet is hip again and it is no longer safe to walk into Whole Foods without an uber trendy canvas tote. Finally something fashionable we don’t have to feel guilty about buying.

Clothing designers are joining the fight against pollution. The fabulous Phillip Lim has started an eco-friendly 10-peiece collection, Go Green Go. All the clothing is made of sustainable fabrics, and is ethically produced. The color palette is earthy and chemical dye-free. The line consists of pieces such as embroidered tunics, hand-pleated asymmetrical frocks, and biker jackets.

Although the collection doesn’t show much variety yet, the pieces are simple and chic. I think only good things can come from this ethical fashion hype. It is the beginning of a beautiful and environmentally sound trend.

Flawless

Just as the weather begins to warm, it’s time to start shopping for fall. As the designers took the runway to showcase their fall 2008 collections one designer stood out against the rest: Lanvin. This classic name has been sheer perfection since the beginning in 1889. It was the first French couture house and has established and refined its name since. Each season, Lanvin designs manage to fuse together a flawless French elegance with a contemporary edge. Lanvin doesn’t follow the fashion trends of the season. It defines them.

Designer Alber Elbaz did it all for fall - simple pantsuits, asymmetrical cocktail dresses, fur stoles, giant jewels, patent jackets, and when in doubt, throw gold glitter everywhere. Absolutely stunning!

April Showers Bring May Flowers

Sometimes I feel that Valentino handbags take trendy too far, boarding on tacky. But this season they got it right. I love these petal bags. The material is classic and they aren't too detailed or cluttered with studs. The beauty of these bags is the shape and central flower is the charm. They are feminine and sophisticated without being cutesy.

If You've Got It. Flaunt It.

Yesterday was the beginning of the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2008. Zimmermann, Lee Matthews, Lisa Ho, and Alex Perry are some of the designers that have taken the catwalk. A provocative trend that has hit the runway this season is sheer fabrics. Lee Matthews showcased his new collection of sexy see-through frocks. The pieces are feminine and delicate, and seductive. It’s time to show off that body that has been hiding under coats all winter.

I can't wait to see what else is coming!

Be My Sweetheart

No it’s not Valentines Day and thankfully February’s chill has gone, but the sweetheart cut is transitioning into designers’ spring/summer collections. This bust line is elegant and sexy. Heidi Klum rocks this sweetheart dress designed by Project Runway contestant Rami Kashou and Kelly Ripa wore an asymmetrical one by Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Mad About Plaid

Everyone give in. Plaid isn't going anywhere and anything that makes dressing like a lumberjack chic sounds amusing to me. I opted for a 3.1 Phillip Lim black and white plaid bomber jacket that I got at the Lim store in Soho.

Candy Necklace

One of the hottest trends this season is jewels that look good enough to eat! Like this Erickson Beamon necklace worn by Sarah Jessica Parker. Mixing different pieces like Parker adds a unique touch. These jewels are fun to spice up your outfit, but avoid over accessorizing. Choose either bold necklaces, rings, or bracelets.

What Goes Around Comes Around

I have a photo of my best friend and me with horrible big hair and matching bright green Jelly sandals. Remember those tacky shoes that were popular twelve years ago? They are back and with a new chic designer makeover. Givenchy has resurrected the Jelly sandal in a gladiator style and it rocks. They come in black, pink, yellow, and white and are available at Barneys stores and at Barneys.com

Enchanting

Prada is stepping out and dreaming big for Spring 2008. The clothing and handbags feature dreamlike, whimsical illustrations. Fairies and nymphs are a refreshing alternative to the typical floral prints. Some of the skirts and dresses are detailed with peacock feathers, which compliments the collection, adding to the beauty and inventive flair of the pieces.

The nymphs feel like an influence of archetypes from Jungian philosophy. Mythical representations from dreams and fantasies. The ad campaign is similar in its use of mystifying images that echo a late sixties, early seventies album cover. These advertisements look straight out of the Cirque du Soleil show LOVE, which is a tribute to The Beatles and is wonderful if you haven’t seen it.

Prada's spring collection and ads are bold and daring and I love it.

Politically Posh

Who says fashion and politics don’t go together? Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton’s “travelling chief of staff,” is strikingly beautiful and brilliant evidence of the contrary. Huma’s position demands that she can handle intense and exhausting situations without breaking a sweat. She is known for being discreet, loyal, and extremely intelligent, especially in matters pertaining to the Middle East.

Huma’s intellect extends beyond political matters. Her keen sense of style has attracted popular designers like Oscar de la Renta. Among her favorite designers are Prada, Charles Nolan, and Catherine Malandrino. She is known for her fashionable and perfectly organized handbag, exhibiting a particular weakness for Marc Jacobs bags. Huma’s life is a chaotic continuum of travelling, political events, mobs of press, fending off rumors and yet there is never a hair out of place. Politics may be messy, but Huma Abedin always looks chic and polished.

In Honor of the Boston Marathon

My favorite day in Boston is finally winding down. The marathon is a wonderful event and heaps of fun. As a current Boston resident I happily participated in the activities. To acknowledge everyone who ran I wanted to feature the Adidas by Stella McCartney sport performance apparel. The collection gives women what they want, clothes that perform and look great. The line consists of clothing for yoga, dance, winter sports, running, and tennis.

The Stella McCartney designs can be found at: http://www.stellamccartney.com/us/en/adidas/

Now this is my kind of Croc!

Crocodile handbags are hot for spring. Designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Chloe, and Nancy Gonzalez are showing daytime and evening bags in this material. The handbags come in a plethora of colors, shapes, and sizes. The Nancy Gonzalez clutches are classic for evening and are made in literally every color imaginable. The crocodile skin and croc-embossed leather wear beautifully and look great even after a few seasons. Any one of these bags is a timeless addition to your wardrobe.

Crocs in Vogue... Really?

Ughhh! I thought Crocs were bad, but somehow they have managed to get worse. I know many people will challenge me on this fact, but I will never accept these shoes no matter how comfortable they are. I was dismayed to see that Vogue featured an advertisement for the new high-heeled Crocs in the May issue. What happened to pain is beauty. I will happily stick to my uncomfortable four-inch stilts!

BADGLEY MISCHKA

Mark Badgley and James Mischka were in Bloomfield Hills Michigan for a charity fashion show event for Breast Cancer at Saks Fifth Avenue. The show featured dresses from spring and fall of their couture and Platinum collection.

I was lucky enough to be in town for the event and for the private dinner last night where they were the honoured guests. I was seated at the dinner next to Mark Badgley! They are both incredibly friendly and extremely dapper and philanthropic. It was a beautiful event and such a pleasure to meet them.

Baby Got Back

Short skirts and plunging necklines are passé. Sexy this spring is the back. Designers are highlighting a neglected area of women’s body. These new pieces are feminine and chic, revealing just the right amount skin. Sexy is back… literally!

The Style Chameleon

Chloe Sevigny is walking proof that it isn’t what you wear, but how you wear it. Her style is unique and undefinable. You can’t predict what she’ll wear but you can guarantee she will rock it!

She is fearless with color and designs.

Chloe shows that anything worn with confidence works. Check her out in the April issue of Nylon magazine.

$5 Fabulous Lashes

I have always sworn by designer brand mascara. Among my favourites have been YSL and MAC, but I found that after about a week they started to dry up. I recently tried the new CoverGirl Lash Blast and I am in love.

The Row's Revolutionary Ad

I know this is old news, but I love Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s new line that launched this fall. I think their style is inventive and retro chic. It’s great that they are finally using their name and their style to design a high-end fashion line, The Row.

The line is beautifully basic. It consists mainly of T-shirts and a few minimalist separates like a blazer and a tight-banded miniskirt that closely resembles my favorite Herve Leger. The pieces allow people to add their own personal flair to the look.

What I am really interested in is The Row’s revolutionary advertising campaign. They have taken the concept of showing people how to wear the clothes to the next level by making a video that is sexy, sophisticated and stylish. The video is simultaneously an advertisement and an artistic entity.

Watch it now!

The Herve Leger Bandage Dress

Women of all ages can’t seem to stop this lust for fashion. I must first repent for my newest obsession, the Herve Leger “bandage dress”. These dresses are classic and the fabric feels brilliant against your skin. They come in all different colours and cuts, and yet the style is very distinctive. People who know fashion can spot an HL from a distance.

Although breathing initially feels like a dangerous idea, don’t be intimidated that they wear like a second skin. One glass of champagne and the compliments help reassure you that this fashion luxury is the hottest trend to resurge.

After one night in the dress I am contemplating becoming a collector.
